The Seminars in Undergraduate Mathematics in Montreal (SUMM) is an annual event organized by students who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate mathematics program at one of the four Montreal universities.

Each year, SUMM organizes a bilingual colloquium for students in mathematics (100 students estimated for this year). During the three days of the conference, students are invited to share their interest in an area of mathematics or statistics in a 25 or a 50 minute talk. Moreover, 4 keynote speakers — one professor per organizing university (Concordia University, McGill University, Université de Montréal and Université du Québec à Montréal), representing different areas of research — are invited to give a 50 minute presentation.

The main goal of the SUMM is to bring together students from the universities of Montreal and elsewhere in the province (including Bishop’s University, Université Laval, Université de Sherbrooke and members of the Réseau des universités du Québec), allowing them to share ideas and interests in order to create a dynamical and stimulating undergraduate mathematical community.

For its eighth edition, which will be held at McGill University on January, 13, 14 and 15, if you are interested in presenting a talk, please indicate so in the section of the registration reserved to that effect.

If you are coming from outside of the Montreal area, we provided some funding for travel expenses. Please indicate whether you want to apply to this funding early on, clearly indicating how you plan to travel. Note that we have limited funding; the organizing committee will therefore prioritize groups travel.

History and mission

Started in 2009 by students at McGill, the first edition of SUMM took place at UQAM in February of 2010.

SUMM’s objective is to enable students to meet and exchange ideas on various mathematical subjects, such as physics, economics, computer science, bioinformatics, and actuarial math. Presentations are given by both students and invited professors from the four universities.

SUMM 2017 will be the eighth edition of the conference. We hope that SUMM will enjoy many years of wonderful events, occurring annually at the different universities around Montreal, and possibly extending further to a provincial or even national level! Please write to us at if you would like to get involved.
